New Bologna Centrale Station

The New Bologna Central Station ((イタリア語:La Nuova Stazione di Bologna Centrale)) is a planned station building for the Bologna Central railway station in Bologna, Italy. The complex was designed by the architects Arata Isozaki and Andrea Maffei (entry by Andrea Maffei Architects with Arata Isozaki & Associates, M+T & Partners, Arup Italia and Ove Arup & Partners Ltd.) for a competition that took place in 2007-2008. The proposal by the architects was selected as the winning project by architect Gae Aulenti, as president of the international competition jury, and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, the main entity behind the competition.
==Concept==
For centuries the rail line divided the city of Bologna in two parts. The historical center with monuments and palaces is situated in the south of the city, whereas the north is occupied by industrial districts (so called “Bolognina”) and the Fair designed by Kenzo Tange in 1967. The urban layout has followed these differences, regular and rectangular in the north, concentrated and radio centric in the south. The new station is designed to string together the past and the modern aspects, the historical center and the new industrial districts. The project hovers, as a white ship amidst the red roofs of Bologna, over the railway lines that connect the city to the rest of Italy. The new proposal means to begin a dialogue between the medieval and modern fabric that still maintain their autonomy by allowing the station to negotiate the division.
Natural light was another important theme of this project. The internal courtyards of the bridged station create poles of light to attract travelers. Inside the station transparency makes it possible to see the binaries level below. Different shapes of windows have been designed for the courtyards to give each of them a different character and make natural light the key element of this project.〔
